Plus Two New Columns

April 21, 2005

This week's His Side will be an open line show. Among other things, we will be discussing the issue of Shared Parenting.
We invite you to call the show and join the discussion in progress at 1-800-439-4805 (lines open this Sunday from 5-6 PM PST).

For those who are outside of our radio stations' coverage ranges, you can listen to the show live this Sunday (4/24/05) via our station's excellent Internet stream at Listen Live. To find out where to listen to His Side with Glenn Sacks on the radio, click here.

His Side Campaign Update: SB 1082 Moves Forward, Sheila Kuehl Unhappy

Yesterday the California Senate Judiciary Committee heard SB 1082, the bill to protect military parents. Arch-feminist legislator Sheila Kuehl threw up smoke in an effort to keep the bill locked in committee but found few allies, in part because of the storm of support we generated for the bill.

A couple of minor amendments will be made to SB 1082 and then the bill will  move on. The Senate Committee Analysis made specific note of the hundreds of you who called, faxed and e-mailed Sacramento after we declared a His Side listener campaign last week. The Committee Analysis quoted the Military Parents Alliance letter:

"[SB 1082] will help correct a terrible injustice currently faced by activated reservists and National Guardsmen who are noncustodial parents. Today these service personnel can return from deployment overseas to find themselves hopelessly in arrears on child support or even facing jail. Others are taken advantage of terribly in custody matters while they are deployed."

Thanks to all of you--who one of our opponents dubbed the barbarian "Sackson Horde"--for supporting our campaign. Military Parents Alliance lobbyist Michael Robinson, who has spearheaded SB 1082 in Sacramento, has informed us that he believes that the bill now has sufficient support to pass. We are suspending the campaign but will revive it if needed.

I urge all of you to donate to support Robinson's lobbying efforts. Though Michael generally prefers to keep a low profile (and usually prohibits me from singing his praises publicly) he has done great work over the past year in Sacramento. For example, Michael was one of the heroes behind the successful campaign to preserve the LaMusga move-away decision last summer. To donate to support Michael's efforts on behalf of the Military Parents Alliance, click here. It is money well spent.

Five Year Anniversary of Elian Gonzalez' Reunion with His Father, Glenn Spars with Feminist DV Leader, His Side Wiretapped

Some of the issues discussed included:

The Elian Gonzalez saga--see Five years later, Elian, now 11, is living a 'normal' life (Sun-Sentinel, 4/16/05)

Glenn spars with feminist domestic violence leader Esta Soler, founder and President of the Family Violence Prevention Fund, one of the world's leading domestic violence organizations, in the San Francisco Chronicle. Soler labeled Glenn's column Domestic violence a two-way street (San Francisco Chronicle, 4/8/05) a "shameful example of cherry-picking and distorting data to confuse readers." Read her letter here.

Glenn's new column Do Women Really Want a Male Birth Control Pill? (New York Newsday, 4/11/05).

Glenn's new co-authored column California's Military Reservists Need SB 1082 (Riverside Press-Enterprise, 4/14/05)

Oregon's House Bill 3099. The bill "prohibits court, in family abuse restraining order, from giving petitioner control of real or personal property in which respondent has financial interest and petitioner has no financial interest." In other words, under current state law a man can own a home and live in it, invite his girlfriend to move in, and then she can get a restraining order and get him kicked out of his own home, even though she has no reason to be there.
