That is great news!  It's one thing to have a step-kid *see the light* but to have him integrate himself into your house hold and have things work out is a true blessing.  So happy for you, your DH and SS.  It's a good thing!

Well, you cannot get blood from a turnip.
 
The SSI is minimal...but it is "something" and more than what some custodial parents get (and it sounds like it will still chap her a$$ that the SSI is going your way for the kids).
 
Don't most states offer an automatic review of CS every 2-3 years?  Can you file a CS review when you file for contempt on the daycare expenses?  Can your local CS department offer any guidance?
 
You may have to suck it up and pay the kids way on your own for now, but I'd still investigate getting your EX accountable.  Yeah, it may take her 5-10 years to be in a place where she can pay..but life does go on and things change.... but the arrears won't go away.  Maybe she'll remarry and they'll want to go abroad on a honeymoon but she won't be able to get a passport until arrears are paid.

Does SD by any chance have an email address through her high school?  I was able to find my SD's by searching around the school website--hers was actually on a webpage for a club she belonged to, but all the email addy's were based on some dirivitive on the last name/first name and you could figure it out by seeing what the other's were.
 
...oh, and save the "intercepted again" emails.  At least she'll know he tried to contact her.

If your grandkids are little ones, this is going to be quite a long ride.  Situations are going to arise that you cannot even imagine right now.  

Read the other forums here.  Knowing that you are not alone is a huge help.  Know your state laws and know your son's wishes.   I've been a non-custodial step mom for over 11 years and it's been quite a bumpy ride.

Cherish any moments you have together.  However, there are so many things that are out of your control and you will need to learn to "let go" of a lot.

Dear Socrateaser / IRS FORM 8332

The custodial parent has signed off (in 1997) on the IRS Form 8332 releasing the "claim to Exemption for Future Years" by stating "ALL FUTURE YEARS" in the space so designated on the form.

A stipulated court order was put into place at that time where the non-custodial parent was given the exemption every year (rather than every other).  The order stated that the custodial parent needed to complete form 8332 but did not stipulate that she needed to fill it out for "all future years."

The custodial parent has now served the non-custodial parent with court papers for (amoung other things) return of the tax exemption to her.

This is a Wisconsin case.

1) Because the custodial parent has signed off on any future claims (with respect to the IRS), does a judge now have authority to "order" that the the exemption can revert back to the mother?

2) In this situation, is there any way that the non-custodial parent can "lose" the exemption --other than if he voluntarily gives it up?

Would it be possible for you to post the statute that states that denying visitation is a Class C felony?  And share what county you went to mediation in?

We are dealing 3 counties (ours, theirs and where the order was entered) and none of the individual local authorities want anything to do with it.

SD (step-daughter, --you're new here) is 14 years old.

Have you considered contacting your state representative?  A while back, DH(dear husband) was having the problem of two counties trying to collect child support on the same order.  Our attorney just told DH not to worry about it (wage garnished in one county--ignored the other county).  Well, he got a letter one day regarding a tax intercept and could get nothing straightened out until he threatened to contact our state rep. And then some how things all got straightened out.
