There are two different kinds of witnesses - percipient and expert.  Percipient are people who witnessed something and can testify as to actual knowledge of circumstances.  They may demand that they be paid for their time, but usually are not paid.  Expert witnesses are those people you hire to express their professional opinions regarding a matter.  They often have a lot of degrees that will give a lot of weight to their testimony.  These folks you have to pay and they charge a lot of money.  The party wanting the deposition has to pay, i.e. you have to pay for her expert to be deposed and visa versa.
