Hi,
My husband and I took Dusty in when she turned 2 and we have had her every since because her birth mother cannot take care of her financially or provide her with a stable enviroment.
The problem is we do not have any legal rights to Dusty because we are not blood relatives but we have been providing for her for over 2 years. Would a judge consider this and do we have a chance if we decide to fight for her? She is a wonderful, shy child and her birth mother lives in an enviroment where Dusty cannot grow or thrive.
What are our chances?
I would check with the laws of your state. Some states have laws that allow a 3rd party/ non family member to apply for and gain legal custody of a child.
Best thing to do is talk with a lawyer to find out what your options are.
