Title: for Nancy Lou or anyone w/answer
Post by: bananas on Nov 24, 2003, 05:13:17 PM
So, if mother told her child that stepmom was responsible for the breakup of mother and father's  marriage, and now child hates stepmom, is that grounds for a civil suit?

You need to look up the state laws for your state regarding slander and libel.  If it damages you, causes you damage to your reputation, standing in the community, etc., then it sounds like it, but I'm not an attorney.

Also, there is more than one type of libel.  You should find a legal dictionary online and look at the definitions for libel.

Also, there is a statute of limitations attached to this, so you'll need to look that up for your state too.

I finally broke down and paid for a membership to versuslaw, com at the recommendation of Soc, and it was worth every penny.  I charged it back to the ex in the lawsuit for the judgment.
