Paying $ before support hearing

I received a summons to appear for a support hearing at the end of next month. I would like to send support to my family now because I feel it is the right thing to do, but I do not want to send all my spare money and not have it applied to the eventual retroactive lump sum that I expect that I am accumulating. If I wait, it may be months befor I can help out my family..

Any advice?

It really depends on your state -- and I'd suggest you be careful.

In OH, ANY money given directly to the parent is considered a GIFT by LAW.  You can't even write "Child Support" on the check or money order or nothing.

Since you're hearing is scheduled and coming up, stick it away in a separate savings account, let the court make their decision, and then send it to them.  

It shouldn't take "months" before you can help out with money.  

Just be careful.

I have searched around and cannot find the statutes for this in NY. Can anyone help?

Look at the very top of the screen and you should see a box with the word "resources"

Click on the choices and go to TGB's links

Then click on NY...

Didn't take time to see if the laws are on-line, but that should be a good start
