What will happen if the false allegations are believed?

What will happen if the false allegations are believed?

If false allegations against you are believed, you will at the very least face fines and court-ordered therapy, at worst you will face arrest and probable imprisonment. You must respond IMMEDIATELY to any allegations of abuse, whether they're about sexual abuse, child abuse, or domestic violence.

I'm new to all this...where do I start?

If you're just getting started on the SPARC site, we'd suggest doing the following:

  1. Read the Steps To Protect Yourself page.

  2. Read the Tips For Getting Started page.

  3. Get an account on the message boards and start asking questions.

  4. Use the SPARC Search Engine to find specific information you're interested in on the message boards, or use this link to search the Articles.
After you've done that, come back here and browse the FAQ Center to see if there are any other topics that you'd like to find out more about. If you have questions that aren't answered in the FAQ Center, we encourage you to ask your question on the message boards.

We also suggest you take a look through the Articles Archive, which has almost 500 pages of practical, tips, tools, and techniques that cover numerous divorce and custody issues.

In general, your best source of continuing information will tend to be the message boards. It's a great place to ask questions, get ideas and advice, and to vent some frustration from time to time.

What are the most common false allegations, and who makes them?

The most common false allegations made are allegations of child molestation, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Allegations of drug and alcohol abuse are slightly less common, as are allegations of mental or psychiatric problems.

Most currently available information suggests that wives are more likely to make false accusations than husbands. When made in the context of custody disputes, mothers are the overwhelming majority of false accusers, in part because they are more likely to be believed than fathers who make similar accusations.

I've been falsely accused. What steps should I take?

The first prudent step when falsely accused is to seek competent legal representation immediately, preferably an attorney who is experienced at fighting false allegations. This is even more crucial if the allegation involves claims of sex abuse, child abuse, or domestic abuse.

The following pages contain information on the responding to false allegations of abuse. Please note that it is extremely important to respond as quickly as possible and as firmly as possible. NEVER assume these allegations will "blow over" or be dropped- the chances are overwhelming that they will not.
