My ex tried to take the children out of shool without me knowing about it. Is there something I can do about that?

My ex tried to take the children out of shool without me knowing about it. Is there something I can do about that?

Unless your ex is prohibited by the parenting plan from taking the children out of school, he or she can probably do that. If he or she is legally prohibited from doing this, you can file a contempt charge in court, but it's a lot of time and money for an uncertain outcome. If you're the custodial parent you may be able to get the local police involved, but many police departments won't address this kind of issue, citing the fact that this is a civil matter and not a criminal one.

You can subpeonea the documents from him if he won't give you copies voluntarily.

My soon-to-be-ex just moved out. Can I change the locks?

My soon-to-be-ex just moved out. Can I change the locks?

Technically, yes, since you both live there and own the house you could change the locks. Be aware that this is likely to have unintended consequences. This is the kind of move that can cause some real escalation in the friction and animosity level between you two. Ask yourself how you'd feel if you came back and found the locks changed. If you feel that you absolutely must change the locks, we suggest that you inform your soon-to-be-ex of it as a common courtesy.

Also be aware that changing the locks won't necessarily keep your soon-to-be-ex out of the house. He or she can return with the police, who may assist them in entering the home so they may remove their property.

Do I have the right to copies of records that are held by lawyers that I have released or fired?

Do I have the right to copies of records that are held by lawyers that I have released or fired?

Yes, with few exceptions, you have the right to a copy of everything that is in your legal file. If you are on reasonable terms with the attorney, ask to come by and look through the file for what you need. If not, you may need to send letters requesting the records that you want. Send the request letters by certified mail so you'll have an audit trail, in case there's a problem getting the records.
