CONGRATS! Your SS is lucky to have you. Now there is a fresh start to work from.

And about the money, if someone took my money, I would not be happy about it either. My family gives money for gifts too. I put it in his educational IRA. Builds fast and someday HE will be able to choose  what his future holds. I took the PBFH off it, this is one less thing she can cash in. She wiped me out, but I will do everything I can to prevent his money to be burned away on nothing.
