When do you get the decision?

When the custody trial is finally over, how long does it usually take to find out the outcome?  Days?  Weeks?  Do you get something in the mail?  Does your attorney find out, then let you know?

What's the usual protocol?

Could be days, weeks, or months.  Depends upon your jurisdiction.

Yes, your attorney will know before you.

Maybe just call your attorney weekly, asking if it's in yet.  That way, you keep your attorney clued in to the length of time it's been, and you won't be left hanging if the attorney's office receives it but overlooked information you immediately.

We went to court over a month ago and havent heard a decision yet. I think it depends alot on the judge and the state you are in.

Our attorney told us the judge has 60 days to make her decision. The judge usually submits a written decision several pages long to the attorneys and GAL.  During 1 of our trial dates the GAL picke dup a 13 page decision that transferred custody to the father and she felt bad telling the mother so close to x-mas.  Of course, the judge can decide to have you come in but that is highly unlikely as they are busy and noone likes to be the bearer of bad news.

I agree you should keep in contact with your attorney so he/she can contact the judges chambers if need be.

There is no correct answer to that question.  Different states have different rules. It is generally when the Judge finally decides the issue. In Minnesota, they have 90 days.
