You are the mom and have him now so you have custody. Do you have court papers now with you having custody? Does it say anything about his visitation? Your child needs to know his father in a safe enviroment. If it is not safe at his house (and you cna prove it) then he may get supervised for a while to prove himself. I would not worry about losing custody but he may get visitation rights. Good luck!

I dont know what state you are in or what the fathers criminal history is. Using previous convictions can be tricky and not usually allowed unless they show harm with this child. You should get a free consultation with an attorney. If you dont think he really wants visits and you dont need the support then negotiate his visits with the child support as your leverage. If you are on good terms try to work something out without going to court. If there are no court orders now and he isnt coming around then dont file anything and see if he just disappears.

Child support and parenting time are not related issues.

If the child does not have a relationship with his father and if this continmues for some time, it is likely that any paretning order would start with supervised parenting time until a relationship was established.  It would then expand from there over time if there are no issues related to safety.
