Adoption of children by step-father

I reside in the state of Wisconson
My children reside in the state of California
I signed and notarized a paper allowing
my childrens step-father to legally adopt them.

The papers were signed by me in Dec 05 and returned
I have not had response child support is still being
deducted from my paychecks.

1. Where can I find out if my children were adopted?
2. Do I have to persue the end of child support payments?
3. How would you suggest I persue this?

You will need a court order.

Yes you do. You must file a motion to terminate support on grounds that the children were adopted by someone else. You don't need to know that the kids were actually adopted to do this, you just need to believe that they were. So, if you file the motion in CA, and use a copy of your paperwork re the adoption as evidence, then it will be up to the other parent to produce evidence showing that the adoption did not occur.

You could open a case with your local Child Support agency, and they will investigate, which could take months, during which you will continue to pay out support money that you will likely never recover. Or you can hire an attorney in CA and force the issue to a speedy conclusion. Of course, you may discover that the step parent changed his mind, which happens frequently, since, let's face it, he's got the kids, no responsibility and you must pay the bill -- all of which disappears if he consents to adopt.
