Well, at this point, I would just send him a note/e-mail that states the childrens wishes and they are getting a little older now. Let him know again what the options are that work for the KIDS. (either the overnight or 4 PM pick-up or the extra on the weekend). I have to say though, we did it and we were 30 minutes from SD. Under your circumstance though, why he will not agree to pick them up at 4 when he is right near you in crazy. He is willing to go home first?  I agree with the others, You are VERY nice to try and work this out with him....Good luck!
