President Mubarak knew, he said he warned the U.S. 2 months in advance.  He did not know specifics, and information was obtained through torture, so it was dismissed.
I was in Egypt in 1998.  The drivers and nannies all carry 9-MM guns because of the families extreme wealth and connections.
Do not want my boys involved in a shoot-out in Cairo :-(
I have Afaf on tape during phone call before her arrest saying,"The only thing more corupt than the Egyptian government is the U.S. Federal Government".  Unfortunately for her, she did not coount on the State of Maryland giving her 10 years.
But in the end, the Fed steped in and gave her a free ride home to Egypt...
