Mom pleads guilty to locking son in trunk during party

Wednesday, November 24, 2004 Posted: 1:35 PM EST (1835 GMT)

SAN DIEGO, California (AP) -- A mother who left her 7-year-old son locked in the trunk of a car while she partied in a bar has pleaded guilty to child abuse and false imprisonment.

Sarah Powell, 27, and her boyfriend, Jake Faria, 30, entered their pleas Monday as part of a plea bargain.

The charges carry maximum prison terms of up to six years, but the couple are likely to be sentenced to probation at a January 5 hearing with credit for time served, according to San Diego Superior Court Judge Browder Willis.

Both were jailed for several weeks after their arrests.

Powell was arrested during her birthday celebration on August 23 at a bar in San Diego's Ocean Beach neighborhood. A witness had alerted police that the boy was in the trunk of Powell's Volvo, which was parked outside.

The boy was found in the trunk with a pillow and a sleeping bag. Police said Powell told them she put the boy in the trunk for safekeeping when she was unable to find a babysitter.

Faria, who is not the boy's father, was arrested a few days later.

Powell's lawyer, Mary Ellen Attridge, said Powell exercised bad judgment, but that she and Faria otherwise have taken good care of the boy. "She has been a very good mother," Attridge said.

The boy is living with a foster family, but Powell is attending parenting and substance-abuse programs and is working to regain custody, Attridge said.

"She has been a very good mother"?? F*CK YOU, Mr Paid-Attorney-Who-Will-Say-Anything-For-Money. This just makes me want to PUKE. This mother can lock her child in the trunk of her car yet her lying, shyster attorney has no problem telling us what a "good mother" she is. Incredible. I'm not sure just what you'd have to do to have this paid maggot say you were a "bad" mother.

As far as I'm concerned, this problem can be solved with a couple of bullets, even though shooting is too good for them in my opinion.

Treated like a bag of groceries. And she is such a good mother, my A$$!
THEY should have to be locked in the trunk. Parents like this should face on 'eye for an eye' and the attorney should join them. People don't do this to their dogs!

I also wonder what the temperture was, California on August 23. Good GOD!

Bet their back in court at some time, facing another abuse charge.

And again, no mention of the father...

Hmm if you cant find a sitter STAY HOME.

Now if a man where to do this to his child now way would anyone say he is a good father.

Ya know it is sad, you get in more trouble for abusing our pets/animals then you do when you abuse your kids, just sick.

Oh ya he had a sleeping bag and pillow. What if the ebrake failed, what if the trunk got so hot it baked the child, what if someone hit the car and didn't stay around.  To many things could happen to this cihld.

I just can't believe some people and what they do to their children.

Evidently whoever ran that study,, doesnt read the news.

ok and now a voice from the peanut gallery........ (just don't shoot me :) )

I totally agree, she did a horrible abusive thing and should be punnished....not the boyfriend...HER....she's the mom and she made the choice.  Yes Wendl...she should stay home....  CA in August at night is not hot, it is cold...sometimes very cold but even discounting temperature, think decreased oxygen from an enclosed environment, dangerous fumes (even if he car isn't running you get some fumes and I'd bet my a** it wasn't spotless in that trunk....OMG  I just don't get some people.

And what about the father?  No offense guys but chances are that he is no better than the mother....like tends to attract like much of the time.  NO I am not assuming anything, I have seen enough of life in the streets to know this is often (though assuredly not always) the case.

Mom deserves to be put under the jail and left there a while.  That study that was mentioned is pure BS.  Abuse is hardly confined to one sex and in the case of mom's it is sadly on the rise.  I am sure it's in direct correllation to women trying to "do it and have it all" (maybe someone should do a study about that?)

Ok, the peanut gallery relinquishes the soap box. (gins)

wish you all the best life has to offer!  :)

A bit more here: http://michaelcapanzzi.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2004/10/19/162780.html

"The boy told police he had been locked in the trunk about 10 other times."

How about locking the lawyer, Mary Ellen Attridge, in a trunk about 10 times and then see how she feels?

Many fathers that I am currently helping, either run out of money to continue the fight, or they are the victims of PAS. BM could have also had the child and 'forgot' to mention it to daddy. He could be living in another State.

I withhold judgement until the facts are out.

man, they say mom made a poor judgement, after reading the article the boy said she did this at least 10 times, seems like a pattern to me.

Regardless if their was air or not, no way should any child be left in a trunk of a car while a parent goes out drinking, that is just sick. Heck when my son was younger I wouldn't even leave him in the car while I ran inside a mini mart.

You are absolutely correct, it could be any of the above.... I only speak from my own observations.  But the point is obviously mom (in this case) should never get that child back.  If dad is unaware he should be made aware if at all possible and given a chance to parent his child.  But if dad is not able to be in the picture, for whatever reason, then the child might well be better off in the care of the state rather than a mother that locks her child in the trunk of a car to go out to party....even once is not excusable.

An effort should be made to find a family member, if this father IS out of the picture. I'd hate to see the State step in. Too many have been lost in the system.
