BRISTOL, Va. – A Virginia Middle School teacher has been accused of having oral sex with one of her 13-year-old students.

Melissa Michelle Deel, 32, of 829 Taylor St., Bristol, Tenn., was charged with felony carnal knowledge and taking indecent liberties with the boy.

Deel, who has been suspended, taught eighth-grade ancient world history and contemporary world issues.

The boy, accompanied by his parents, went to the city Police Department two days before Christmas and told investigators the incident occurred sometime in December.

The boy said Deel parked her car on the street at his home. He got into her car, and she performed oral sex on him, according to police records.

The boy told police he developed a close relationship with his teacher last month and that they had been calling and e-mailing each other.

Deel's phone has been disconnected and a real-estate agent's sign placed in front of her one-story brick house. No one was home Tuesday.

Her attorney, David Harmon, could not be reached for comment.

No other students have come forward, said city police Detective Keith Anderson.

"There's always a possibility of more (allegations)," he said. "It's always possible, the more access they have to children. At this point, we have no information that that's the case."

Virginia Middle's carpool line buzzed with talk about the accusations.

"It's a concern," said Cathy Allison, who has a seventh-grade daughter. "I hope it is an isolated case."

Although shocked at the news, she said she felt confident that school administrators would handle the situation appropriately.

"You hear a lot of bad about the school system – and I'm sure there is some – but there is a lot of positive, too," she said.

If convicted on both counts, Deel faces up to 20 years in jail.

Deel was free on $10,000 bond with an arraignment hearing set for Jan. 24 in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

The last time a city school employee was accused of inappropriate involvement with a student was in 1996.

John Brown, a former state delegate, mayor and Virginia High School athletics director, pleaded guilty to nine misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A felony charge of forcible sodomy was reduced to a misdemeanor as part of a plea bargain.

Six boys said he gave them alcohol and played games of strip basketball and pool with them.

Despite the guilty pleas, Brown, who was sentenced to five years on probation, denied any sexual misconduct.
