My attorney is wanting to get a GAL involved in our upcoming custody case.

I've never dealt with a GAL before and was wanting to know what I should expect??

Ours was okay. She was on our side but really had no power in the situation and was afraid of the BM. Once you get the name, call and make an appointment. You tell them your case and bring evidence. We played tapes, showed our documentation. Sometimes they will ask to see you with the child but make sure you have that time where you can talk freely. Write it all down so you have a script and can hit everything. Do not put down the other parent, just state facts of the case and what would be in the best interests of the child.

THe GAL will be in court with you. When people go on the stand the GAL can ask them questions on the stand in behalf of the child. A GAL can give a little speech (or talk to the judge directly) about what they see going on. If you have a lawyer they can talk to them and use them as a mediator to try things between the parents while the trial is going on (set up visits).

Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you don't.
